Why your yacht deserves a Navy-grade welder.
The welders certified for Navy hulls work on private vessels too — and the difference shows up years later, not on the invoice.
There are two kinds of welds on a boat: the ones that look good at the dock, and the ones that are still holding five years of salt, vibration, and sun later. From the pier they're identical. The difference is procedure — the right filler for the alloy, the right prep, the right heat, and someone who can prove all three.
That proof is our day job. Nautilus is a NAVSEA-certified ship-repair shop; our welders qualify to FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW procedures and spend their weeks on Navy and research-vessel work, where every joint is documented and inspected. When that same crew turns to a yacht, nothing about the standard changes — only the size of the vessel.
Where it matters on a yacht.
Most yacht metalwork fails at the details: a stainless rail welded with the wrong filler that tea-stains within a season, an aluminum davit mount cracking at a stress riser, a fuel tank repair that wasn't pressure-conscious. These aren't cosmetic problems — they're procedure problems.
The work we take on private vessels maps directly to our trade certifications: structural aluminum and steel repair, custom 316 stainless — rails, mounts, deck hardware — tank repair and fabrication, and TIG work where the joint will be seen and judged. Questions worth asking any yard.
Whoever touches your boat, ask three things: What procedure will you weld this to? What filler, and why? And what documentation do I get when it's done? A yard that answers quickly is a yard that welds this way every day. A yard that shrugs is guessing — on your hull.
Since we're asking, here are our answers.
“What procedure will you weld this to?”
A qualified welding procedure specification, matched to your base metal, thickness, joint, and position — not a default setting. Thin-wall marine aluminum topside gets GTAW (TIG); heavier structural sections run GMAW (MIG); pipe runs TIG pipe procedures. These are the same qualifications our welders hold for NAVSEA-standard work, and we'll name the procedure before an arc is ever struck.
“What filler, and why?”
Chosen per joint for strength, corrosion, and crack control. For most 5086/5083 marine aluminum that means 5356 filler — the right balance of strength and saltwater corrosion resistance. Where crack sensitivity or castings are in play, 4043 earns its place instead. Marine stainless gets 316L to keep the weld as corrosion-resistant as the rail it joins. The point isn't the specific wire — it's that there is a reason, and we can tell it to you.
“What documentation do I get?”
A record of the job: the procedure used, the welder's qualification, material and filler traceability, and inspection notes — the paper trail your marine surveyor or insurer can audit years later. On Navy work that documentation is mandatory. On your boat, it's simply included.
