AI comes to the shipyard.

What artificial intelligence actually changes in ship repair — and what it never will. A working yard's view.

Shipbuilding has survived every technology wave by doing the same thing each time: keeping what makes vessels safer and faster to deliver, and ignoring the rest. Steam didn't spare the sail lofts; CAD didn't spare the drafting tables. AI will be no different — some of it is genuinely useful on a waterfront, and some of it is a demo that has never smelled cutting fluid.

Here's where we see the real signal, from the deck plate rather than the conference stage.

Where AI is already earning its keep.

The clearest win is predictive maintenance. Modern vessels stream telemetry — vibration, temperatures, battery state-of-health — and models are getting good at spotting the drift that precedes a failure. We designed exactly this into our electric amphibious concept: continuous monitoring that turns maintenance from reactive to scheduled. For an operator, that's the difference between a planned yard visit and a dead boat on a Saturday.

Second is planning. A repair availability is a scheduling puzzle — trades, permits, parts with long lead times, dry dock windows. Software that reasons over that puzzle and flags the collision three weeks early is worth real money, because in this business late is the most expensive material there is.

Third is inspection support. Computer vision can pre-screen weld imagery and hull scans, flagging areas for a human inspector's attention. Note the wording: for a human inspector. The machine narrows the search; the qualified eye makes the call.

What doesn't change.

No model holds a torch. The weld that keeps a watertight door watertight is still made by a qualified welder running a qualified procedure, witnessed, and documented — because NAVSEA and the Coast Guard certify people and processes, not predictions. That's not the standard lagging the technology; that's the standard knowing what a hull is for.

Our position is simple: we'll adopt any tool that makes the planning sharper, the inspection earlier, or the paperwork faster — and none that stands between a certified tradesperson and the metal. The hands stay on the torch. The tools get smarter around them.
